Not far from Melia Medical Center is a fascinating destination. It features one of the world’s finest collections of American furnishings, ceramics, and paintings. We are talking about Bayou Bend, and it’s found inside the former home of Houston civic leader and philanthropist Ima Hogg.
The house sits on fourteen well-maintained acres in the historic River Oaks neighborhood, and thousands of people walk through the doors every year. Highlights include:
Ima began collecting American materials in the early 1920s, and it wasn’t long before she hired two architects to build a home worthy of the collection. They completed the house in 1928, and she opened it to the public 38 years later.
Today, over 2,500 objects are on display. And many were made or used in the United States between 1620 and 1876. Highlights include paintings, sculptures, and textiles, and the knowledgeable staff is happy to answer any questions.
Naturally, the Gardens represent Ima’s love of beauty, flowers, and natural woodlands. And Bayou Bend was the first public garden in the state to practice organic gardening. As a result, she designed them as a series of outdoor rooms for living and entertaining. So they feature crape myrtles, magnolias, and other trees with a Southern Association.
The Shop at Bayou Bend
Nestled in the cottage next to the house, The Shop at Bayou Bend features the work of talented artisans. The products come in all price ranges and include picture frames, ceramic bowls, and serving trays.
Also, both the house and garden tours are at your own pace, and visitors can explore Tuesday through Sunday.
